How to read the score of JAPANESE percussion
KO-TSUZUMI
PON or TON: A circle |

PU: A line asross a circle. Similar sound to "PON", but smaller than "PON". |

TA: "TA" of the square form of kana. High sound. The percussionists in "NOH" notate this sound with a white triangle similar to the "CHON" of "O-TSUZUMI". But almost all of us "KABUKI" percussionists are using this "KANA" character to avoid confusion. |

TI: A small black circle similar in sound to "TA", but softer. |
OH-TSUZUMI
CHON: A white triangle. |

TSU: A black triangle. Similar in sound to "CHON" but softer. |
|
DON: A small white circle. Pianissimo sound. |
SHIME-DAIKO (TAIKO)
TEN: Sound with no mute. |

TE: Similar sound to "TEN". About Half the length of "TEN". |
|
KE: Similar sound to "TEN". About Half the length of "TEN" and played by the left hand in fast tempo. Using next sound is "TEN" or "TE". |

LE: Similar sound to TEN. About Half the length of "TEN" and played by the left hand in fast tempo. Using next sound is "TSU". |

TSU: Small sound with mute. |

KU: Small sound with mute. For left hand only. |

KO: Small sound with no mute. For left hand only. |

LU: Small sound with mute. For left hand only at fast tempo. |
